05:13 – Brewing in the wilderness

21:13 MDT

I wasn't feeling very touristy today. I blame the lingering jetlag. After a late start this morning, I had Mexican lunch with Brad at a very typical mall. The great indoors amazes me every time I come to North America. The food was tasty though.

After lunch, I took the bus to Boulder. On the way there, the bus drove past a huge and ugly building I was sure I'd seen on pictures before. When I saw the NIST sign, I remembered it's where they keep the clock. The fact that I recognize a building just because I know there happens to be a clock inside is a bit scary, but there you go.

Boulder is a very nice little city. Interestingly, I walked passed two "Belgian Chocolate" shops. I was tempted to walk in and try to behave Belgian, but decided against it. Instead, I bought postcards and spent some quality time at a bakery (successfully negotiating arbitrary cookies!) writing them.

Around 18:00, Brad picked me up (I'm sure I violated at least a couple of laws getting into his car) to go to dinner at the Boulder Beer Company (warning, "Flash") on Wilderness Place together with Will, Scott and family and Sean (briefly in town). It was awesome!

I had an amazing buffalo burger. In Colorado, the law does not require pubs to charcoal meat. It was amazingly tasty. I also tried a couple of very yummy beers, including a stout which was not as "burnt" as many stouts I've had.

On the way back to Will's, I foolishly asked where I could find a postbox to post my postcards. This is North America. The postman picks up your post if you remember to put the flag up. Sensible system. Why don't we have that in Europe?

At the pub, I made vague plans with Sean to include Portland, OR as a detour in my next North America trip. Probably in May around BSDCan. They have beer there too. I'm told it's excellent. I intend to find out!
